Chemistry

Sulfide in a water sample is coulometrically titrated withiodine (H2S + I2 ----> S + 2H+ + 2I-). If a 10.00 mL aliquot ofthe water sample requires a current of 0.75 A for 5.4 minutes toreach the end point, what is the molarity of the sulfide in thewater sample?

(A) 0.5036 (B) 0.1259 (C) 0.0051   (D) 0.0013

             (H2S + I2 ----> S + 2H+ + 2I-).

                 S-2 + 2e- -------> S

                     Z =2

                     F   = 96500C

                      M   = 34g/mole

                    t      = 5.4minutes = 5.4*60   = 324sec

                   W   = MCt/ZF

                        = 34*0.75*324/2*96500   = 0.043g

molarity = W*1000/G.M.Wt * volume of solution in ml

                 = 0.043*1000/34*10    = 0.1259M

molarity of sulfide is 0.1259M

(B) 0.1259

              W     = M
