Mechanical Engineering

In a galvanised steel water supply line 100 m long and 50 mm indiameter, water is pumped from a reservoir to a vented storage tankat an elevation 8 m above it. The following fittings are use: 1hinged foot valve with strainer, 3 x 90? elbows, 2 gate calves(open), 20 screwed sockets, 1 sudden exit. The water viscosity is 1x 10-6 m2/s and the density is 1000 kg/m3.

(a) Calculate the friction factor at a flow rate of 3 L/s

(b) Using a constant friction factor as determined in (a),determine the system head equation in terms of velocity.

(c) Using a constant friction factor as determined in (a),determine the system head equation in terms of flow rate in L/s

(d) Using a constant friction factor as calculated in (a),determine the system head and fluid power for flow rates of 0, 1.5,3, 4.5, and 6 L/s

(e) Draw the graph of system head and fluid power against flowrate on one sheet of graph sheet, using the values calculated in(d)

(f) If the efficiency of the pump is 65% when the flow rate is 5L/s, determine the input power to the pump at this flow rate.
