(i) Principal quantum number (n):

It was proposed by Niel’s Bohr. It is represented by ‘n’. It indicates the orbit number. Principal quantum number (n) can also be designated by letters.

It determines the size and large extent of energy of the orbital.

The maximum number of electrons present in an orbit = 2n2 where              n = number of the orbit.

The shells are represented by the letter as

n =                  1          2          3          4          ……..

Shells =          K          L          M        N         ……..

Size of an orbit increases with the increase of principal quantum number. The energy of orbit also increases with increase of ‘n’ value.
