The following are the proposed plans for the transformation ofCanal Street as a great urban place: Pedestrian connectivity,recreational opportunities and environmental enhancements tosupport the health and well-being of all; the transformation planstrives to support the varied needs of all and allow convenientphysical access to cafes, craft markets, shops and rain gardens. Asafe connected pedestrian and bicycle network encourages andsupports residents of all ages and physical capabilities to accessvarious places without the use of a vehicle. Well designed andunobstructed crosswalks and sidewalks allow users with mobilitylimitations to traverse the sidewalks and onto the harbour.Landscape enhancements includes street trees and other plantings,benches, fountains, awnings which contribute to healthy and desiredoutdoor environment encouraging residents and tourist to dine, shopand visit on foot.
· Strengthen existing architectural style and infrastructure;Strong street walls comprised of buildings (cafes, craft market,shops, etc.), fences, walls and landscaping clearly articulate thepublic space that contains street trees, cobblestone paving,lighting and other amenities. The sustainable design, through theuse of green gardens, building orientation and trees support astrong civic environment initiative. To ensure maximum safety therelevant authorities and necessary crime prevention measures willbe implemented.
· Cycling trails, public arts, improved sidewalks; Canal streetwill be transformed into a comfortable pedestrian environment thatencourages walking. Wide sidewalks, street trees and a unifiedfamily of paving and street benches encourage increase pedestriansactivity. Safe and convenient for cyclist and pedestrian crossingsalong. The inclusion of high-quality, diverse public art helps toshape and define the street, express Trinidad’s history and drawtourist into its boundaries.
· Utility Improvements and sustainability; • Servicingrequirements for the area include sanitary, water and powerconnections. Every effort will be made to co-ordinate and utilizeservices effectively to reduce cost where necessary. Showcase andtest sustainable initiatives such as, but not limited to, a rangeof low impact development features such as rain gardens, low waterlandscaping and renewable energy/efficient street lighting. Powersources will be provided at the bases of street trees in order tosupport seasonal lighting, where possible. These are aimed tohighlight the connections between ecosystems, infrastructure, andthe urban environment.
