Design services for renovations can be considered very expensive for the small business or home owner. I propose that we develop a design firm that sends a preprogrammed laser scanner to home owners or small business for self-guided automatic room scanning. The scanner will measure the room dimensions and scan the infrastructure and take video documentation. The home owner or small business will be sent instructions on how to scan and what additional infrastructure related items to video, like the a/c unit, hot water heater etc. All of the information is stored in the equipment and returned to the design firm to begin preparing a design based on pre-discussed criteria. Once a schematic design is complete the homeowner will receive an IPAD with a 3D rendering with detailed finish selections to choose from. The individual will select finishes and add comments to the drawings on the IPAD and return them to the architect. The architect would make a face to face visit for the last approval before completing the design.

If we combine the concepts. Both architectures and technology are growing high return industries. What if we develop a three printer that prints small renovation projects in elevation format. What this means is that after the scan is done and design elements created in a drawing the printer would print a small rendering of the renovation space. An elevation is a view into a space as if you are standing in front of the space looking at it head on. Architectural firms often build models for clients from different materials, this 3D printer would print and even better model for their clients.

The reduction in time the architect would spend would give them an upper edge in the industry.

This business will be targeting home renovation, with both architecture and technology sectors involvement. The product will reduce the operational cost of the architectural plans to both the consumer and the construction company. It will also reduce the total time of the design and reduce change orders during renovation, saving money. 3-D printing from 3-D renderings allow the company to provide a higher level of customer service, allowing the customer an exact model of the finish product giving the consumer greater participation and visualization of the finished product. The 3-D printing will streamline the process and save on time, while delivering a better product to the customer. This will allow our company to serve more customers with greater efficiency compared to more traditional methods. Overall the companys products will be marketed to the do-it-yourself home renovator and to small construction businesses.

The strategy of the business is to create a company that through the use of current technology such as 3D printers and architectural scanners will be able to become a top competitor in the architecture and engineering industry. Through the use of new technology, the business will be able to reduce costs associated with architect and remodeling fees for customers. The development of state of the art 3D printers and scanners will also give the company a competitive advantage in the industry since other competitors will not have access to the technology developed by the business. The company also plans on expanding globally as they become more established starting with introduction of the business into Canada after the first year of operation. An environmental and industry analysis will also be conducted as part of the companys strategy to assist in better identifying customers needs so the company can create superior service and products that align with customer expectations. Through the integration of this value creating strategy, the firm would be able to achieve strategic competitiveness in the engineering industry (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2014).
