Three roles of the U.S Government in the health care system and inhealth insurance are provider, payer and lawmaker. The Governmentare the providers of healthcare services. Some of these healthcareservices include Veterans Health Association, Medicare, Medicaidand they support research into new healthcare. The Government arethe payers of the third party services. The two main kinds of thirdparty services are private insurance and government programs.Lawmakers make sure there is fair competition and that they protectthe public. To ensure fair competition they made laws. To protectthe public they created laws such as Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Actcreated (FDA). This sets quality standards for drugs, medicaldevices, food and cosmetics.

Private insurance is regulated by the Federal government. Someexamples of how the federal government regulates private insuranceis HIPAA. HIPAA gives you the right to your own health informationand lets you set who can see and receive your health information.COBRA is another example of private insurance regulated by thefederal government. This protects employees in case of loss of jobor work hours and allows employees and their dependents to keeptheir health care benefits.
