Scenario 2: Hunter Molding Machine (Machine Guarding)
While operating a Hunter molding machine, it is necessary for asingle operator to reach inside the machine to adjust the patternor blow it off to ensure that it is free of particles or otherdebris that will create deformed parts. This function is conductedonce every 75 minutes, 8.5 hours per day. The molding pattern isplaced on the holder by the machine, which then automaticallyrotates the pattern 180 degrees before the molding sand iscompressed on the pattern, and then this process is repeated toensure a two-sided mold is created. When the molds are compressedand then separated, the operator must reach inside the machine toclean the pattern by blowing compressed air onto the mold. Thefoundry supervisor is concerned that there is a potential for theoperator to be caught in the rotating pattern holder, causing anamputation. He has asked for your help to provide a control measureto prevent any possible injuries to the operators. Note: A physicalbarrier between the operator and the pattern holder is not possibleor feasible due to production activities. Please see thephotographs below as a reference.
