The cross section of the column iskept constant in all cases, and E = 200 GPa. Take factor of safety= 4. Instead of T section, a hollow column of same material havinglength 5 m and external diameter of 55 mm when subjected to acompressive load of 60 kN, there was a shortening in the length ofthe column by 0.120 cm. Suggest a suitable value for the thicknessof the column to withstand the safe crippling load when one end ofthe column is fixed and other end is free?
