Project Title: Development of pre-employmentselection testing for entry-level Retail Salespersons in retailclothing stores.
Scope of Project: The entry-level RetailSalesperson position is responsible for selling the popular “BigTurtle” clothing and merchandise at their retail stores. There areapproximately 50 retail stores located throughout the Southeastregion, employing over 600 Retail Salespersons. Currently, turnoverfor this title is averaging 50% annually. Big Turtle Clothiers,Inc. (BTC) also anticipates opening 10 new stores per year for thenext 5 years. The starting pay scale for Retail Salespersons rangesfrom $9.50 to $11.00 per hour, depending on the location, withhealth benefits provided after 6 months of employment. RetailSalespersons also receive a 15% discount on all “Big Turtle”clothing and merchandise. At present, there is no formalpre-employment selection testing for this job title. Candidates arescreened using application forms developed by the individualstores, with preference given to candidates with prior retail orcustomer-service experience. BTC would like to standardize thisprocess, to use the same testing process for Retail Salespersonsthroughout all current and future stores. It is also very importantthat the selection system be legally defensible against charges ofdiscrimination. BTC is also concerned about problems with shrinkagein their retail stores.
