In July of that year the bulk of the fleet reached a smallisland off the coast of Virginia that was called Roanoke. Afterbuilding a small fort on the north side of the island, thecolonizers started relations with a Native American tribe thatlived on the island, the Aquascogoc. These natives showed littleinterest in building relations with the English colonists, and theysoon parted company. After this encounter, however, the Englishnoticed that one of their silver cups had gone missing, and theyattributed its disappearance to the Aquascogoc. Grenville, theEnglish captain, was furious. He believed that the Aquascogoc hadstolen the silver cup. Whether or not this was true, angryexchanges followed and soon the English burned the Aquascogocvillage. The English held their fort against the subsequent attacksof the natives.
