The idea of using the sun’s energy was thought of the late 1870when two American scienists became interested in the work of anelectrican named willouhby smith who was testing underwatertelegraph lines for faults using a material called selenium. Smithrealized that electricity travelled through selenium well when itwas in light, but it didn’t in the absence of light. It was notlong before the scientists discovered that the sun’s energygenerates a flow of electricity in selenium. It wasn’t until decadelater that Charles Fritts invented the world’s first everphotovoltaic cell. He did this by putting a layer of selenium ontoa metal plane and covering it with pieces of gold that had beenbeaten into thin sheet. Under the light this cell made even moreelectricity than had been seen with just selenium but not enough tobe useful. At the time, photovoltaic technology was contending withother further developed technologies such as hydroelectricity andsteam driven generators. Upon hearing of the developments in thefield, Albert Einstein committed his studies to understanding therelationship between light and electricity. Building on the work ofPlank, Einstein argued that light was actually made of tiny packetsof energy that move likes waves. He referred to these ‘’energypackets’’ as photons. He later argued the energy of these photonsis wavelength dependent, so the photons at visible wavelengths aremore energetic than those of infared.
