Keepingorganizations properly succeeding is vital in our mission at OTC(Organizational Theory Consultants). We pride ourselves in beingable to upright the most complex of situations involving variousorganizations needing a turn around to keep from failing in theirspecific industry. Organizations need to have their culture runninglike a welloiled machine toavoid any hiccups which can have a negative impact. Culture is oneof the most important theories we at OTC focus on. Culture involvesa variety of different aspects that reside in the organizations weare called into help. Culture can have many differentvariablethat need tobe addressed such as the ethics, morals, values, synergy, relationships, etc.

The culture withinorganizations is highly regarded in terms of success within theorganization; a lack of culture can ultimately cripple anorganization from the inside. “There are many definitions oforganizational culture yet all pointing to the idea that culturerepresents a shared understanding of “How we do things aroundhere.” It is comprised of written and unwritten, norms, beliefs, values, attitudes, and feelings that are expressed in the stories, rituals, ceremonies, behaviors, and the workplace’s physicalsetting. These differentattributes contribute to the whole picture of the organization, creating essentially a personality based on how the company ticksinternally. Culture within an organization is the most vital aspectthat can be researched in depth in regards tosuccessand failure within organizations.

Wehave been summoned to a semi large retailer in the D.C area whomprovides a variety of services and the sale of goods, an overallgeneral store. The morale among the store is quite wellbetween associates and supervisors, with a clear and concisecompany goal of customer service. The associates of this retailerabide by this overall goal and respectfully the customers admiretheir attitude. The associates among themselves have formed a tightknit family like atmosphere, but with any organization there are afew bad apples that appear to want to go against the grain of theorganization. From an outside picture this retailer has all thepositive cultural aspects to remain a top competitor in theirindustry; but, the store owner has noticed the statistical salesare on in a dive bomb towards becoming bankrupt. The owner hascalled us to peel back the various layers of his organizations toidentify the potentially fatal underlying issues.

Our team has been called intothis retailer for a reason so we can take a thoroughlook into the underlying aspects as to why this retailer isbeginning a downward spiral to failure. Once we identify theproblematic organizational culture issues that present themselvesthen we can help turn this organizations into a positive trendingsuccessful retail store.

Prestige apparelhas beenin business for almost 10 years. Known by both their employeesand customers to high moral and very little turnover it issurprising to many that they are currently facing the issues theyare today and receiving such negative media attention. Almost twoweeks ago a female employee reported a sexual harassment incidentto HR and her immediate manager. Their response was that they sawno reason to take extreme measures and that having a sit-down withhim should be enough. For years Prestige apparel has made it theirbusiness to ensure their employees of the fact that they have awork environment where they feel safe above all else. This situation changed thingsfor some employees, they no longer felt safe andprotected. A system that once made them feel safe by providing theability to report incidents as such andknow that they would be thoroughly investigated failed them.In thissituation HR failed to take extreme measures because they did notwant to lose a manager who has been employed for years with thecompany and produces great numbers. Not only is this unethical buttheir lack of holding this individual accountable for their actionshave caused a huge uproar in a once safe workplace. Employees nolonger come to work with the same work ethic they once did. Themoral has completely shifted, and the tension canbe felt amongst the customers every time they enter thestore.

Prestige’s decision to turn ablind eye on a situation this serious has resulted in the employeefeeling as if their only choices were to quit or stay and deal withthe possibility that it could possibly occur again and be sweepunder the rug. The employee decided to take matters into her ownhad and go public with her story which is now drawing negativemedia attention to the company. What once made this company uniquewere their company values; employees were always encouraged to bethemselves, to work as a team to accomplish/meet goals, to protectand treat one another with respect has suddenly fallen to the waistside. As time passed theyultimately forgot to keep the pace of a once family-oriented workenvironment and some managers became more obsessed with companygains and meeting their sales in order to receive their bonuses atthe end of each quarter. Once money became the main goal allethical standards went out of the window. Upper management turned ablind eye to important issues taking place under their noses inorder to keep their highest earners in que. Now that the media hascaught wind of this situation loyal customers and investors aredemanding the company take action. Failure to do so can greatlyimpact the future of the company.
