Cultural implication can be seen in a wide range ofdifferent ways including semantics, word connotations, tonedifferences, and differences in perception. I will find differenceswhen comparing the national cultures of Japan and the UnitedStates. Globalization has produced more interactions amongindividuals from various background and culture than previously.Individuals are nowadays more open-minded in the marketplaceglobally with stiff competition emerging from almost all places inthe world. Diversity can cause problems to organizations and alsobe a solution to some problems. The challenge is to remove the verycore of diversity and strategically manage it for the enhancementof the organization and people. This paper will address the impactsof cultural diversity in an organization and the tools needed foreffectively managing cultural diversity.
The Differences in the United Statesand Japan’s Corporate world stems from each nations culture,principles and beliefs. Japanese perceive their existence as abrief instant in a long chronicle of mankind. Cultural beliefsinfluence an individual’s behavior. Americans are comfortablenetworking with unfamiliar people and are confident making contactwith their potential colleagues to acquire data. In the unitedstates the belief is that people should look after self and familyand should not put faith in authorities for support.
The Japanese culture believe in having a tightly knitted network inwhich people strongly distinguish things between their own groups,such as relatives, clans, organizations. Within culture of Japan itis easily shown that the people categorize themselves into clans itis seen even the entertainment industry in Japan the value of alast name in the culture is high. “Individualism exists when peopledefine themselves primarily as separate individuals and make theirmain commitment to themselves” (Adler, Gunderson). Meaning whenbasically how a person views themselves as priority to others.Individualism implies weakly implemented social networks in whicheveryone is solely concerned with themselves. It is a trait mostcommonly subjugated towards Americans. Japanese on the other handare considered to be on the exact opposite end, as they believemore so into collectivism. “Collectivist hold common goals andobject, not individual goals that focus primarily on self-interest”(Adler, Gunderson). Collectivism characterizes such cultures as theJapanese, the people there truly believe that the will of the groupshould determine members specific behaviors and beliefs.
The career stability made due to thelevel of uncertainty avoidance contributes to the career successand quality of life. The idea of the group always being moreimportant everyone strives together to better an organization, sothey tend to grow as a whole within their company. Mostorganizations in Japan compare themselves to other groups creatinga competitive market against one another that in total creates thelevel of success, everyone has the same goal in the organization todo better, so they sacrifice their personal needs for their careerin ordinance to build up their organization. The Japanese qualityof life is represented by the level of success made so theyprioritize everything in life towards making a successful careerwherever they go.
