Case Study 10: Thinking outside the classroom to promote gender equality: A rationale and roadmap for translating service-learning to organizations
Overview: Authors Meghan E. Norris and Katelynn Carter-Rogers share the following in their introduction to the case:
Organizations are unique in their cultures, and paths to gender equality may vary depending on context. The necessary solution for gender equality, therefore, may rely on the opportunities to provide organizations with contextualized insights into the dynamic barriers specific to that workplace, and the ability of that organization to identify creative and evidence-based solutions so that everyone can thrive in a dynamic context.
Please thoroughly read through the entire case study and then pay special attention to the table (Table 10.1) on pages 148-150. Researchers are speculating that service-learning can perhaps be used to help increase raise awareness re: women leaving the work environment in large numbers (at this one particular organization citedas high as 75% of women in the 1st 5 years of employment), and then seek to build empathy among employees and managers as they explore potential cultural issues and possible steps to address any issues (and remedies) that may indeed increase retention.
One reason this article is significant is that using service-learning in an industry setting could have high potential/opportunity to make impact as we tackle issues that have led to inequalities in the workplace.
