The United States military has a budget that is equal to that of the next ten highest spending countries combined. This is clearly a holdover from the days of the Cold War when there was a need for constant readiness against a highly armed and equipped adversary. None of these wars have been won and their value in contributing to national security is questionable. What is the nature of the US defense budget and how is it determined? President Trump, who campaigned on the pledge of reduced involvement in foreign interventions, has just pushed through a big increase in spending. What is the logic of this and why does the electorate continue to support such large expenses in military spending when there are many other demands on public finance?
