Maria dropped her bags on the floor of the dorm room andintroduced herself to her new roommate, Denise. They got alongeasily and after talking for some time Maria left to go to thelibrary. Maria marveled at their very different lives. WhereasDenise’s parents are doctors, Maria’s mother works two jobs to paythe bills. Maria considers herself very lucky to have won ascholarship to college. Maria worries that her younger brothers willgrow up too quickly and make dangerous decisions like joining oneof the many neighborhood gangs. She realizes that she is veryfortunate to be able to leave her poor community, but worries thather absence will harm her family. At the same time, Maria isdelighted to have the opportunity to learn new things, to studywith bright students and professors, and to prepare for a career asa doctor. As a pre-med major, Maria has a very busy semester aheadand she hopes that she won’t disappoint those who have given hersuch grand opportunities.
