Do you favor or oppose hate crime laws? Why?

In my understanding, hate crime laws are based in intention. Iunderstand the point of view that punishing someone more or lessbased upon their intent or reasoning can take away freedom ofspeech. In our country everyone is allowed to have and express hisown personal beliefs- as long as they cause no direct harm-regardless of how another person views those beliefs. If you saythat because someone committed a crime because of their hatred ofanother race they should receive a longer sentence, then it issaying they are not allowed to believe as they do. This doesincriminate on freedom of speech. However, we regard intention incases other than hate crime. We have many degrees of murder chargesand each one has its own consequences based on the intents of theguilty party. We are fine with restricting freedom of speech inthis way because of the severity of the action. Why should hatecrime punishment be handled differently?
