LA Corp. is a medium-sized corporation that specializes in quarrying stone for building construction. The company has long dominated the market, and at one time had 70% market penetration. During prosperous years, the companys profits and conservative dividend policy resulted in funds becoming available for outside investment. Over the years, LA has had a policy of investing idle cash in equity instruments of other companies. In particular, LA has made periodic investments in the companys main supplier, BC Industries Limited. Although LA currently owns 18% of the outstanding common shares of BC, it does not yet have significant influence over the operations of this investee company. LA accounts for its investment in BC using IFRS 9 and FV-OCI without recycling. Telma Hayak has recently joined LA as assistant controller, and her first assignment is to prepare the 2017 year-end adjusting entries. Telma has gathered the following information about LAs relevant investment accounts:

1. In 2017, LA acquired shares of Avery Motors Corp. and Keisha Electric Ltd. for short-term trading purposes. LA purchased 100,000 shares of Kasey Motors for $1.30 million, and the shares currently have a fair value of $1.50 million. LAs investment in Keisha Electric has not been profitable: the company acquired 45,000 shares of Keisha at $20 per share and they currently have a fair value of $650,250.
2.

Before 2017, LA had invested $22.55 million in BC Industries and, at December 31, 2016, the investment had a fair value of $21.55 million. While LA did not sell or purchase any BC shares this year, BC declared and paid a dividend totalling $2.30 million on all of its common shares, and reported 2017 net income of $13.80 million. LAs 18% ownership of BC Industries has a December 31, 2017 fair value of $22,183,000.
