Business processes posing themselves as Fraud risk factors. Part 1. Business processes and procedures leading to violation of internal control principle Let's assume i work at one of the Material handling departments in Walmart. Below is the summary of processes and procedures which i found to be leading up to Internal control violations. One of the principle of internal control monitoring is approval by appropriate authority in personnel to ensure effective discharge and communication. Here, requisition slips were being signed and approved interchangeably by Requisition officer as well as procurement teams. Hence, there were enough windows present to inflate the material requirements to overstock the inventories and thereby causing internal control risks over the accounting period. Another vital principal is designing and implementing suitable access controls for operations. In the perishable goods section, Materials were shelved as LIFO i.e expiring materials in front and fresh ones at the back to reduce wastage. However, open shelves were made accessible to all the store sales person an they would reorder the shelving if any customer required the fresher ones. This violation of need based access controls leads to higher wastage and more time required for re shelving the perishable good every time a new requisition came in. verify that the access controls are granted only to the current student base and time to time elimination of ex-students is being made. Part 3. Business processes posing themselves as Fraud risk factors. Fraud risk factors are circumstances existing in business causing risks of such potential thereby leading to a fraudulent practice. Such frauds if not caught in a timely manner, may pose risk of total shutdown. We need to identify such areas that pose as threat to business by being fraud risk factors. There are some of the business processes which are more exposed to fraud risk factors as below a) Recruitment process - Favoring less qualified employee to get higher wage contracts b) Payroll Processing - If not monitored closely, payroll accounting is deceitful enough to enable employee to claim fictitious expenses as reimbursement c) Cash Handling - If reconciliations and reporting are not made on a daily basis, cash handling is always the area at risk. d) Incentive based Sale - This process has to be clearly defined from top to bottom level because even higher level executives may perpetrate to defraud the company based on personal gains.
