A PIN diode is a diode with a wideundoped intrinsic semiconductor region between a ptypesemiconductor and an ntype semiconductor region The ptype andntype regions are typically heavily doped because they are usedfor ohmic contacts The wide intrinsic region is in contrast to anordinary pn diode The wide intrinsic region makes the PIN diodean inferior rectifier one typical function of a diode but itmakes it suitable for attenuators fast switches photodetectorsand high voltage power electronics applications A PIN diodeoperates under what is known as highlevel injection In otherwords the intrinsic i region is flooded with charge carriersfrom the p and n regions The diode will conduct current oncethe flooded electrons and holes reach an equilibrium point wherethe number of electrons is equal to the number of holes in theintrinsic region When the diode is forward biased the injectedcarrier concentration is typically several orders of magnitudehigher than the intrinsic carrier concentration Due to this highlevel injection which in turn is due to the depletion process theelectric    See Answer
