Hello, please answer the following discussion topic on what yourown option is and what you think.
Obviously excessive consumption of alcohol during pregnancy canlead to developmental problems for a woman's unborn child. Problemsinclude things such as fetal alcohol syndrome. There have beencases in which restaurants have refused to serve pregnant womeneven a single alcoholic beverage. What do you think about thispractice? And what do you think about the whole notion of moderatealcohol consumption during pregnancy?
Here are my following options over the topic, please let me knowwhat you think and why you think what you think about thisdiscussion. Â
discussion 1
Prior to reading this discussion topic, I had yet to reallyconsider alcohol consumption during pregnancy beyond the realms ofit as something we (as folx who have the opportunity to bearchildren) are taught is not an option. Thinking about this in abroader context, however, it may be important to consider therealities of addiction and that in some scenarios excessive alcoholconsumption extends beyond the realms of a “choice.\" However, interms of refusal to provide service to an obviously pregnantperson, my conceptualization of this practice is in agreeance; inthat those who are pregnant should not be afforded the opportunityto drink alcohol in a restaurant/bar setting due to the knowndevelopmental concerns (fetal alcohol syndrome, partial-fetalalcohol syndrome, and alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder)associated with alcohol consumption during pregnancy. My mainreasoning for this line of thinking is rooted in the reality thatalcohol usage during pregnancy, even when consumed in moderation, can lead to teratogens and thus, even moderate or slight use shouldbe avoided and discouraged (Berk, 2017). Additionally, myunderstanding of other forms of service refusal, such as cuttingfolx off when there is enough evidence for a bartender to assumethey have exceeded their limits, further supports this belief. Inparticular, this practice is seemingly similar to withholdingalcohol service to pregnant folx, which is based on the bartender’sdiscretion and is done in attempt to mitigate instances ofharm.
discussion 2
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy has proven to effect thedevelopment of the child's physical and mental state, and arestaurants ability to refuse alcohol service to a pregnant womenonly acts a protective barrier for the child that is unable tovoice for themselves. Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders can hinderthe child's ability to learn, articulate themselves linguistically, and lead to health issues in the vital organs. Although there isnot a known amount of alcohol that begins to impact the developmentof the fetus, the potential neurological and physical impacts thatthis can have outweighs the short-term satisfaction that alcoholcan provide. With this being said, I agree that restaurants shouldhave the ability to refuse service to a pregnant woman, but manywoman do not began to physically show signs of pregnancy until thesecond trimester; as a result of this, many woman can get a waywith having a drink or two. Although I believe that restaurantsshould have the ability to refuse alcohol service to a pregnantwoman, education on the mothers side is vital to preventing alcoholconsumption from even taking place. Even if the mother has analcohol addiction, education could help sway the mother fromwanting to continue, but this does not always prove to be fruitful;hence, a restaurants right to refuse service can help protect thechild from being a product of alcohol consumption duringpregnancy.
