Ethical Issues Regarding EmergingTechnologies
We examine only one area of the different types ofemerging technologies and the ethical issues that can arise inconnection with them. We focus on the ethics of businessescollecting detailed, and often very private, information on theircustomers in order to use that information to increase theirprofits. Ethical issues can be examined from the perspective of theconsumers whose information is being collected or from theperspective of the businesses, concerning both how they collect andhow they use this information.
Is the increase in information gathering by businesses forincreasing their profits a good or bad thing on the whole? Considerthe arguments given by Johnson, the perspective of customers, andthe perspective of the businesses themselves. Do you think theincreasing use of such technologies leads to violations ofindividual rights and, if so, specifically what rights?
