Consider the following Hill Country Community Hospital casestudy:
Hill Country Community Hospital is a 100-bed acute-care facility inrural Texas. The hospital has served the local community for over40 years but has experienced financial decline over the past 3years. Hospital administrators believe that the best way to cutcosts is to terminate all contracts with staff physicians and allowa large, Dallas-based physician group to take over in-hospitalpatient care. The move would quickly solve the current budgetcrisis, even enabling the hospital to show a profit for the fiscalyear. However, community residents are strongly opposed to theplan, as they have always been accustomed to receiving in-hospitalcare from their family physicians. The proposed move is creatingpublic relations problems, with both external and internalaudiences. Employees are also highly resistant to the change, asthey fear that their jobs may also be outsourced and that bringingin outsiders to provide patient care will ruin the hospital’sreputation. This is creating emotional labor, poor morale, andincreased patient complaints. As resistance is a naturalphenomenon, understanding and working with it effectively is key tosuccessful organizational consultation. It is essential for the ODpractitioner or consultant to recognize and deal with resistancethat is derived from psychological needs and wants. There are alsoelements that have been shown to stimulate “normal” resistance andtherefore should also be considered during the consultationprocess.
