Developmental Biology has made substantial contributions to thefield of Evolutionary Biology, providing tools that allow us tomechanistically study Darwin’s concept of “Descent withModificationâ€. This combination of Developmental and EvolutionaryBiology has become its own discipline, Evo-Devo. The phenomena ofheterotopy, heterochrony, and heterometry can combine in a varietyof ways to bring about generational variation in a species thatcan, in conjunction with natural selection, result in evolutionarychanges. “Darwin’s Finches†is an example of this. Provide andEvo-Devo description of how an animal such as a hippopotamus mighthave given rise, over many generations, to animals like whales anddolphins.
