Subject: Internship program
We do want a strong internship program that can provide us withsuperior, well-trained personel; however, the program must meetgovernment regulations.
Your inquiry about the status of our interns caused my staff andme to look into this matter more carefully. Our attorney told usthat all interns must be considered employees and paid at least theminimum wage. We leanred that college students are legitimate onlyif they are recieving real training. Interns are not legitimate ifthey do any of the following: 1. If they displace a regularemployee. 2. If they complete a client's work for which we bill theclient. 3.If they are promised full-time jobs at the end oftraining.
I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. I would like toarrange for you to meet with the vice-president and me to analyzethis fall's internship program and consider changes.
Having every single intern sign a contract saying that they arewilling to accept college credit in place of wages does not providelegal protection. An intern must do more than busy work.
After eviewing our complete program, changes must be made. Webelieve that future interns must have a structured trainingprogram. Let's meet to discuss!
