Write the reaction of HNO2 with water and set up the ICE

            HNO2 (aq) + H2O (l)    ---- > NO2- (aq) + H3O + (aq)

I        0.500                                           0                      0

C          -x                                             +x                    +x

E         (0.500-x)                                     x                       x

Use ka expression to find the value of x

Ka = 4.6 x 10-4 = x2/ ( 0.500-x)

Solve quadratic equation.

X2 = 4.5 x 10-4 ( 0.500-x)

x = 0.01478 = [H3O+]

we know pH = - log [H3O+]

therefore

pH = - log ( 0.01478)

= 1.82

So the pH = 1.82
