Question

Chemistry

Carbonyl fluoride, COF 2 , is an important intermediate used inthe production of fluorine-containing compounds. For instance, itis used to make the refrigerant carbon tetrafluoride, CF 4 via thereaction 2COF 2 (g)⇌CO 2 (g)+CF 4 (g), K c =9.00 If only COF 2 ispresent initially at a concentration of 2.00 M , what concentrationof COF 2 remains at equilibrium? Thanks! ( I keep getting .1 butthat is incorrect)

                   2COF2 (g)   ⇌   CO2 (g)   +   CF4 (g)

initial            2.00                 0                    0

change           -2a                +a                   +a

Equb            2-2a                 a                    a

Equilibrium constant, Kc = ([CO2 ][CF4 ]) / [COF2 ]2

                              9.00 = (a x a) / (2-2a)2

                                  a = 10.857 M

Therefore the concentration of COF2 remain at equilibrium = 2-2a

                                                                                     = 2-(2x0.857)

                                                                                      = 0.29 M
