Calculate enthalpy for the following reaction Ca(s) + 1/2O2 +CO2 = CaCo3 Given the following reactions: Ca(s) + 1/2 O2 = CaO (s)H= -635.1 kj CaCo3 = CaO (s) + CO2 H= 178.3 kj

Ca + 1/2 O2 -----> CaO          dH = -635.1 kJ              ------- (1)

CaCO3 -----> CaO + CO2           dH = 178.3 kJ                 -----(2)

Reversing the above reaction, we have:

CaO + CO2  -----> CaCO3         dH = -178.3 kJ                 -----(3)

Adding reactions (1) and (3), we get

Ca + 1/2 O2 + CaO + CO2 -----> CaO + CaCO3       dH = -635.1 - 178.3 kJ

cancelling CaO on both sides, we get:

Ca + 1/2 O2 + CO2 -----> CaCO3       dH = - 813.4 kJ

Enthalpy for the given reaction is -831.4 kJ
