Chemistry

CaCO3 can be roasted to produce CaO and CO2. This reaction iscarried out in a flask connected to an open-end mercury manometerwhen the atmospheric pressure is 764 torr. If the pressure of theCO2 produced is 0.245 atm, determine the total pressure in theflask AND the height difference between the two arms of themanometer. I cant find the diference in height.

The total pressure inside the flask is calculated as

Total Pressure = Atmospheric Pressure + Pressure of CO2

                                  = 764 torr + (0.245 * 760) torr

                                  = 764 torr + 186.2 torr

                                  = 950.2 torr

Height corresponding to pressure of 1 atm is 76 cm.

Thus, 0.245 atm pressure difference will show a height difference of (0.245 * 76) cm = 18.62 cm
